Building A Legacy
When it comes time for MAVI surgeons to retire, they may be leaving the practice of medicine but they have built a legacy for others to continue into the future. It isn’t always easy to own a vascular surgery practice, but that’s why everyone doesn’t do it. It takes special people who want to do special things. The types of things that led some to want to become vascular surgeons, but unfortunately not all finish their fellowship or practice for a few years and still have those motives in the forefront of their minds. But for those who want more than just money, to retain their clinical autonomy and have the opportunity to build something worth working this hard for, MAVI may be just what the doctor ordered.
Dr. Mike Waldschmidt became the first MAVI surgeon to retire. As you can see above he was successful in raising a beautiful family as well as a successful practice. He is being recognized in perpetuity on the MAVI Emeritus Partner Wall. Photos below show public recognition when he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Liberty Hospital and at a private event on his last work day. He continues to be involved at MAVI attending Journal Club sessions for the Fellowship as well as other MAVI social events. He may not be present every day anymore, but he will never be forgotten.
