MAVI Loves Its Surgeons & Their Loves

It’s important to love what you do and we expect our surgeons to have a strong work ethic, but help keep that within reason even for a vascular surgeon. A new surgeon can expect to only have primary call 8-9 weekends per year (1:6) and a MAVI Fellow takes the initial hospital calls every night of the year.

Surgeons have to give up some time with those they love and/or doing the things they love when they are on call, so we know it’s important to help our surgeons spend all the time possible doing what they love with whom they love. We not only want to get to know you, we also want to get to know your loved ones, your hobbies, your heritage…if it’s important to you, it’s important to us.

For some surgeons it is family time at home or on a boat, for others it’s hunting, fishing, watching the Kansas City Chiefs or woodworking. For some surgeons it is getting to a kindergarten graduation ceremony or soccer game and for others it is getting a sick pet to the vet or getting away during hunting season each year. We love to see newborn baby and college graduation photos. We outfit families with MAVI gear because we want them to understand what MAVI is and to be proud of their spouse or parent for doing all they do for patients. We see how hard it can be for our surgeons, so we can only imagine how hard it is for their loved ones to be without them sometimes. We give gifts to their loved ones because our surgeons give the gift of life and limb every day.

These are real photos of our real surgeon families. They aren’t perfect photos and our surgeons know they don’t have to feel they need to be perfect outside of the OR, they just need to be good human beings and that they are.

Watching little MAVI babies grow up...

We’ve gotten to watch the littlest Wagner grow from a newborn…and she did receive a MAVI onesie, we just don’t have a photo of it. We look forward to the adorable Wagner children’s Christmas photo each year.

We're all in this together...

It isn’t easy being the spouse of a vascular surgeon, so we intentionally create opportunities for them to get acquainted hoping they will remember there’s always someone who can relate to how they may feel during challenging times.

One big, happy family

While the pandemic put a temporary hold on our ability to have large gatherings, it has been a MAVI tradition. Bringing home and work families together keeps everyone moving in the same direction, communicating and supporting our surgeons. It isn't uncommon for our CEO to be in contact with spouses working on PTO planning, getting important dates added to their calendars, etc. The staff organizes baby and wedding showers, we host retirement parties and holiday celebrations, and we attend funerals. Regardless of the occasion, if it's important to our surgeons, it's important to us.
